This is a part of a weekly series that will analyze the upcoming season for each ACC Men’s Basketball Team every Thursday leading up to the 2023-24 season.
So far, we have covered Boston College, Clemson, and Duke.
Now, let’s take a look at Florida State.
2022-23 Season Recap
The Seminoles did not have a season to remember last year. Typically one of the more talented teams in the ACC, they finished just 12th in the the conference and stumbled to a 205th finish in KenPom.
FSU struggled in all of the main efficiency ratings during conference play - 12th in offensive efficiency and 13th in defensive efficiency.
They closed out their season with 7 losses in 8 games.
2023-24 Roster Outlook
The Seminoles lost some key pieces from a team that wasn’t very good last year.
Matthew Cleveland went to Miami, Caleb
Mills headed to Memphis, and Naheem McLeod will be playing for Syracuse this season.
With that being said, they did make some moves in the portal, have some players coming off injury, and should be deeper this season.
Primo Spears was one of the best players for Georgetown last season and averaged 14.4 points, 5.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He will give the Seminoles an experienced ball handler from the jump.
Darin Green was one of the better three point shooters in the ACC last season and averaged 13.4 pts per game in 34 minutes last season. Look for his role to be expanded beyond just shooting from outside.
Cam’Ron Fletcher averaged 10.8 points and 7.5 rebounds in just under 30 minutes per game.
Josh Nickelberry joins the Seminoles from LaSalle, where he was the 6th man of the year. He averaged 10.9 points and 2.7 rebounds.
Cam Corhen is coming off an injury, but averaged 8.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game early last season.
Jalen Warley is back after averaging 6.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game last year.
Jaylin Gainey sat out all of last season with an injury, but he was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year in the Ivy League before coming to FSU.
Taylor Bol Bowen is a top-100 recruit who could make an immediate impact at the forward spot.
2023-24 Schedule Outlook
The Blue Devils didn’t shy away from competition with their schedule this season. Here are some notable matchups:
11/17 - at Florida
11/20 - vs. UNLV in Daytona Beach
11/21 - vs. Colorado or Richmond in Daytona Beach
11/29 - vs. Georgia in ACC/SEC Challenge
12/9 - vs. USF in Sunshine, FL
Florida State will look to get back on track with a few transfers, some solid returning pieces, and a pretty favorable out-of-conference schedule.
Make no doubt that Leonard Hamilton will have the Seminoles ready in his 22nd season at the helm in Tallahassee.
Until next time!
